Barbara is a first-generation college graduate from Cotulla, a small town in South Texas, and the first among five siblings to attend college. Valuing the educational emphasis laid by her parents, she earned a B.A. in history with English as a second teaching field, followed by an M.A. in history with a minor in government and additional certification in social studies. Her personal life is enriched by marriage to Loyd Burns, a retired Denton police officer, and the joys of three children who are Denton ISD graduates and four grandchildren who are currently attending public schools.

Professionally, she dedicated 28 years to teaching social studies, with 20 of those years spent at Denton High School and Ryan High School. Her engagement extended beyond teaching into active participation in both educational and community spheres—serving in the PTA, Ryan High School’s Campus Leadership Team, and leading student incentive and honor programs. Recognitions include Ryan High School Teacher of the Year. Community roles include membership in the League of Women Voters, the Denton Chamber of Commerce, and volunteering for Loaves and Fishes to aid the homeless, reflecting a deep commitment to civic involvement and the betterment of society.
